At Oberhausen, NRW, Germany, I experienced a whole new side of golf—one filled with energy & technology. Visiting Topgolf Oberhausen with a group of friends completely changed my old perception of golf as a quiet, traditional sport reserved only for seasoned players. Instead, what we found was a mix of innovation and entertainment that made the game feel fast-paced and exciting.

For me personally, it was a firsthand look at how technology is transforming the way we engage with sports. Here’s why Topgolf Oberhausen left such a lasting impression—and how it gives us a glimpse into the future of sports in general.
The Evolution of Golf with Technology
Golf has traditionally been a sport of precision, patience, and pristine greens, often played on sprawling courses under the sun. But places like Top Golf, Atomic golf, etc., are turning it into a social, tech-driven experience.

Opened in January 2022, Topgolf Oberhausen is the first of its kind in continental Europe, and it’s filled with innovations that make it welcoming for beginners like me and my friends, as well as seasoned golfers.
High-Tech Systems at Topgolf
Located right next to the Westfield Centro, we were greeted by a sleek, modern setup that felt more like a high-tech arcade than a traditional golf range.

When you step into one of the 102 climate-controlled hitting bays, you’re greeted by a monitor that displays your player profile, game stats, and even a real-time trace of your ball’s trajectory—complete with details like speed, distance, and angle. This instant feedback makes every swing exciting.

The bays are spread across three floors, and we were lucky to snag one on the third floor, which gave us a fantastic view of the brightly lit outfield.
What’s Inside a Topgolf Ball?
Once you see the screen flooded with data in real time about the balls position, several questions will come to your mind (for me it did). How is the position, speed and distance of the ball registered? Among the thousands of balls how does the computer know which is mine? How does the ball come to my bay in seconds, How does the system note the flight path of the ball? and many more. Lets try to understand how it all works.

What’s inside a Top Golf ball? (watch here)
Unlike a standard golf ball, Topgolf’s balls are designed to integrate seamlessly with the venue’s advanced tracking system. At the heart of each ball lies a tiny RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chip, roughly the size of a grain of rice. This chip is the key to the system’s magic, enabling precise tracking and personalized feedback for every shot.
1. How Does the System Track the Ball?
The real-time data on the bay’s monitor is made possible by Topgolf’s Toptracer technology, a sophisticated system that combines the RFID chip with an array of sensors and cameras. Here’s how it works:

- RFID Identification: Each RFID chip has a unique identifier, allowing the system to distinguish your ball from the thousands in play. When you hit a ball, the chip communicates wirelessly with a network of 640 outfield readers strategically placed across the driving range. These readers detect the chip’s signal, instantly associating the ball with your bay and player profile.
- Tracking Position and Flight Path: As the ball travels, high-speed cameras and radar-based sensors, part of the Toptracer system, capture its trajectory. The cameras track the ball’s initial launch angle, spin rate, and speed, while the outfield readers continuously monitor its position in real time. This data is processed to map the ball’s full flight path, from the moment it leaves your club to its landing spot in the outfield.
- Real-Time Feedback: The system calculates metrics like distance, height, curve, and accuracy, displaying them on your bay’s monitor within seconds. Whether your shot hooks, slices, or lands in a target, the Toptracer system provides a detailed breakdown, making the experience both interactive and insightful.
2. How Does the Ball Return to Your Bay?
One of Topgolf’s most seamless features is the rapid delivery of balls to your bay. After a shot, a new ball is dispensed almost instantly, thanks to an automated system. Beneath the outfield, a network of underground channels and conveyors collects balls from the targets and returns them to a central sorting hub. Here, the RFID chip is scanned to log the shot’s data, and a new ball is routed to your bay via a dispensing mechanism. This process, optimized for speed and efficiency, ensures you’re never waiting long to take your next swing.
Evolving Golf’s Appeal
Topgolf’s tech-driven approach is part of a broader evolution in golf. Historically, golf has been seen as a sport for the affluent, played on sprawling courses with strict etiquette. Topgolf flips this script, offering a compact, urban venue next to Westfield Centro that’s accessible by public transport. Pricing is group-friendly—€30 to €50 per bay per hour, splitting to €5-€8 per person for a group of six—making it comparable to bowling or a movie night but with more interactive fun. Unlike traditional courses, where weather can disrupt play, Topgolf’s climate-controlled bays ensure year-round enjoyment.

The social vibe further broadens golf’s appeal. Our Sunday evening visit was anything but mundane. The staff, from the front desk to our bay host, were quick and friendly, ensuring we had everything we needed. The ability to order food and drinks directly to the bay with a QR code added to the relaxed, party-like atmosphere.
This setup makes Topgolf ideal for diverse groups—kids can play simplified games, friends can compete, and companies can host team-building events. With over 80 venues worldwide, from the U.S. to the UAE, Topgolf is proving that golf can be a global, inclusive activity.

Comparing to Traditional Golf
Compared to traditional golf, Topgolf’s technology makes the sport faster, more engaging, and less intimidating. On a golf course, you’d spend hours walking, retrieving balls, and calculating scores manually. At Topgolf, the automated systems handle everything, letting you focus on swinging and socializing. Traditional golf requires costly clubs, green fees, and often lessons to feel competent; Topgolf provides free clubs, unlimited balls, and instant feedback that teaches as you play. While a round of golf can feel solitary, Topgolf’s multiplayer games and shared bays foster camaraderie, as we experienced with our cheers and high-fives after every shot.
This evolution mirrors trends in other sports, where technology enhances accessibility. Topgolf’s model shows how golf can adapt, drawing in younger and more diverse audiences who value entertainment and instant gratification over tradition. By making golf approachable, affordable, and social, Topgolf Oberhausen is not just a venue—it’s a blueprint for the sport’s future.
